Social Media Trends: The Art of Point of View Videos + Children’s Mental Health

by Ayanah Dowdye, Contributing Author

Intro:

POV, otherwise known as Point-of-View, videos on social media have really taken on two forms. In one sense, POV videos create an immersive experience by presenting content from the creator's perspective, allowing viewers to feel as if they are part of the scene or narrative. These videos often engage audiences by placing them in the shoes of the creator or a character, fostering emotional connections, and encouraging interactive participation or discussion. Alternatively, POV videos can also be when the content creator is explaining a particular scenario or situation that typically involves the creator speaking directly to the camera as if they are addressing the viewer personally. In this type of POV video, the creator often describes a specific scenario or acts out a situation, allowing the viewer to experience the event from the perspective of the person in the scenario. This style is commonly used to create relatable content, convey emotions, or share personal experiences in a way that makes the viewer feel directly involved in the situation being described. In either scenario, POV videos can range from storytelling and humor to educational content, and they are popular for their ability to make viewers feel directly involved in the content.

How to talk to kids about it:

  1. Ask your kids: What POV videos they have saved or shared. POV videos often revolve around relatable experiences, like school life, friendships, or family dynamics.

  2. Have a conversation about the videos: POV videos can be both entertaining and meaningful, blending humor, drama, and life lessons. This combination makes social media use more enriching and purposeful, as teens engage with content that resonates with them on a deeper level.

  3. Create a new skit together or re-enact an existing skit using the voiceovers: This can help your teens develop technical skills, such as video editing, scriptwriting, and acting, exercising more creative outlets that they may not otherwise engage in.
