Introduction


Our smartphones have become indispensable in modern life. The average person spends 4 hours and 37 minutes on their phone each day, enjoying constant contact with friends, engaging leisure activities, perusing unlimited information, and doom scrolling social media feeds. While the benefits are numerous, the rise in smartphone use has prompted concerns among researchers and the public. Studies now link excessive smartphone use defined as over 4 hours per day (but varies by individual) with increased anxiety, depression, and sleep issues. In response, there is growing awareness of digital detox, a practice designed to reduce screen time and enhance mental and physical well-being.The digital detox movement advocates for taking breaks from screens through methods such as scheduled disconnection periods, device-free zones, or mindful technology use. Initiatives like the Global Day of Unplugging, observed annually in March, encourage individuals to step away from their devices and engage in offline activities. This movement underscores the benefits of unplugging, including improved focus, reduced stress, and better interpersonal relationships, as people strive to find balance in an increasingly digital world.

How to Talk to Kids About It:


  1. Impact of Excessive Screen Time

    Discuss the pros and cons of excessive smartphone use. Ask, "How do you feel after spending a lot of time on your phone? Do you notice any changes in your mood or sleep?"

  2. Engage in Activities that are Offline

    Encourage offline activities such as sports, scrap booking, reading, or cooking. Emphasize the importance of taking breaks from screens.

  3. Set Healthy Boundaries

    Have a conversation about setting limits on screen time and creating device free zones in the house, such as at the dinner table.
