World of Warcraft, often shortened to WoW, is a massive multiplayer online role playing game (mmorpg) released in November of 2004. The game sets the player’s avatar loose into several sprawling open worlds with thousands of quests, characters, and environments to interact with and explore. Though there are specific in-game goals that can be completed, players are encouraged to find their own fun in the world much like how you would in a theme park. At the peak of its popularity, the game boasted 12 million players actively paying for a subscription to the game. Though its current active subscriber count is around a third of that as of 2023, the game still remains a pop culture juggernaut with a host of spinoff games, books, comics, fan content, and even a feature length movie.
If your child plays WoW, here are some questions that you could ask them so that you could share in their interest:

Do you play Horde (left) or Alliance (right) and why?
The Alliance and Horde are the two main factions of the game. They have a long history of war against each other, and players are expected to further this conflict through player versus player combat (PvP) and attacking their rival faction.

What's your main character’s class?
In WoW, your character’s class determines their unique abilities, items, quests, interactions, etc. A main character or “main” is usually the character you have the most time invested in or the first one you’ve made. Other characters created by the player are referred to as “alts”. You can ask your child why they chose that class, and what they like about it. You can even ask to watch your child play so that you can see and ask questions on how they play the class. As of right now, there are 14 classes in WoW.
